St Luke’s Nursing Home

Hogan Interior Design Consultants recently worked on the redesign of St Luke’s Nursing Home in particular the Dementia Unit, Education Centre, Day Care and Admin Building and Staff Reception Area.

For those not familiar with St Luke’s Nursing Home, it has over the last century, built a strong and well-respected reputation as a leading provider of residential care and support services to older people in the Cork region.

The St Luke’s ethos is to create a home like environment where all residents feel safe, secure and supported and enable the individual to attain their optimal potential for physical and mental health and this was something that we were mindful of and felt wanted to reflect in design

The design project for St Luke’s Nursing involved Hogan Interiors the design of the Bedrooms, Kitchens, Living Rooms, Treatment Rooms and Relaxation Rooms in the Dementia Unit; the reception area, offices, training rooms and public toilets in the Education Centre; the Dementia Day care unit offices, shower rooms, canteen and board rooms and the Staff reception sitting area, canteen, shower units and locker.

In the Dementia unit particular attention was paid to the use of colour, lighting, flooring, fixtures and fittings, for example contrast and colour variations are useful to pick out features and set off furnishings. Gloss paints tend to be shiny and reflective which can cause discomfort. Patterns should be soft and relaxing rather than jazzy and gaudy, three-dimensional representations of real objects should be avoided. With research and discussions with staff we were able to make this a comfortable and friendly home where people with dementia might live.

Overall this project took 13 months to complete and we worked with contractors John Paul Construction, and Peter Murphy and Frank Murphy of Partners Architects. Like working on any design project in Cork, Valerie Hogan, Interior Designer Cork found this a particularly emotional project to be part of and was extremely proud of the end results knowing that through her designs she was able to help so many residents, families, careers and staff members enjoy these valuable areas within St Luke’s.

Message from St Luke's

"Hogan interiors were the designers involved in the re-furbishing of our newly extended Alzheimer Unit, Maguire House. We are delighted with the outcome which has preserved the safe, secure and homelike environment synonymous with our care for the older person here at St Luke’s. Valarie was a pleasure to work with and I have no hesitation recommending her and Hogan interiors to prospective clients."
